Describe Yourself:Born in New York City, 1932, attended PS 6, Bronx Science, Heights College, NYU, (now closed), English major, 1952 US Army. Went to graduate school in Europe on the GI Bill 1955-60, studied art history at Courtauld Institute of Art, languages at Universities of Madrid and Perugia wrote a novel, Vangel Griffin, that won the Harper Prize in 1961. Short stories in Mademoiselle, Antioch Review, Paris Review and other magazines, married, moved to Connecticut, six children. Wrote a Civil War novel that didn't get published, needed money, stopped writing, worked in office equipment and publishing until 1969, started Market Data Retrieval.
CEO of MDR for 28 years, sold it to Dun & Bradstreet, ran D&B Debt Collection and MDR. Elected to Board of Ed in Westport, served 15 years, three as chairman.
Retired from all that to go back to writing. Finished a new novel, Succession, published May, 2008. Wife died six years ago. Two grandchildren so far. Have a yellow lab, a woodstove and a new website, oldtimewriter.com with a blog about The Way Things Used To Be.
Spend my time writing, splitting wood, seeing my family, walking my dog. -
